POWER AS A HUMAN NEED (NO REALLY)

Have you ever asked yourself why people play political games and strive to get to the top of the ‘Food Chain’? Why they choose professions and career paths that lead to powerful positions in their organisations?

One of the factors that drives their decisions is a need to be in a powerful position to make decisions, to exercise power to others and to have control.

We all crave for power. Power is a fundamental human need. Consciously or unconsciously we want to exercise power to others and we want someone to exercise power to us. Our culture is power-dependent. Our hierarchy of social context is set so that money and power are very much related and those who have either or both, rule the world in socio-economic and political sense.

All is good but power really tests our ability to be humble, kind and generous. There is a saying that if you want to see person’s real face, give them a lot of power. There are hundreds of folk tales and stories about people transforming their values and beliefs, falling from high grounds of reasoning to the pitiful game of powerful manipulations and secrets.

So how can we have the need for power satisfied in our culture, without damaging our soul, environment and relationships?

If we look at effective models of exercising power in functional families, for example, power is a natural phenomenon due to age and experience between parents and children. It is used to create safety and comfort for the family union.

Watch this video to find out some examples to reapply into your life:

If only we could take this example to other areas of life and exercise power with a single goal to create more safety and comfort for others, that would change the world and bring peace to families and societies.

Now I would like to hear from you, how do you exercise power?

That’s a food for thought for this week.

Until the next one,

Stay positive, humble and enriched.

With love & gratitude,

Darya
